Series: Beauty of the Universe - Einstein Ring
Albert Einstein may have identified the galactic phenomenon that bears his name, but he did not live long enough to witness an Einstein ring, a phenomenon he believed would remain unobservable. An Einstein ring occurs when light from a distant galaxy or star is bent by the gravity of a massive object, such as a galaxy cluster, lying between the light source and Earth.
According to Einstein’s general theory of relativity, gravity is a manifestation of curved space-time, and when this curvature is caused by a massive object, it deflects light, creating the illusion of multiple sources when there is only one directly behind the object. The ideal visualization of this effect would involve a perfectly symmetrical arrangement, resulting in a ring-like structure of light visible to an observer’s telescope. The obverse of the coin artistically portrays this phenomenon: a curved wave representing the Einstein ring is depicted, with the light source on the left and a simplified cluster of galaxies in the center that deflects the light multiple times.
The German term for "gravitational lens" is included, along with the formula ?Ø=4GM/bc² used to calculate light deflection. The reverse of the coin mirrors the shape of the obverse and features a color-printed depiction of an Einstein ring.
